Can cash or card-based copy vending equipment be connected via the Port Connection Kit-A1?
Yes, however coin equipment vendors should be aware of the signal vs. events timing with the Foreign Device Interface and Port Connection Kit-A1. Using FDI, an imageRUNNER sends signals about the job type (BW vs. Color) and paper size after each copy is made, whereby the charge management device deducts money from available funds. If the price for color jobs is higher than for BW, it may be possible for a user to pay for a small BW copy, make 1 copy as a large color copy . The Port Connection Kit does not report a job until it is complete, and cannot interrupt the job.

By using the current FDI Specification, what information can be obtained from a Canon device?
The current FDI Specification for Port Connection Kit provides the following signals to an external device:

  • enable/disable copy
  • count copies made
  • detect paper sizes (2)
  • distinguish color/monochrome copies

Does this FDI Specification support all imageRUNNER devices?
No. The Foreign Device Specification – For Port Connection Kit supports a limited set of imageRUNNER devices. These include: iR C5185 / C4580 / C4080plus “i” models; and iR C3480 / C3080 / C3380 / C2880 / C2550 plus “i” models.

A related, but separate, FDI connection via a Copy Cable is supported by other monochrome imageRUNNER models. That specification is not currently available.

Is there more than one FDI connection method?
Yes. FDI has two versions: 1) For Color imageRUNNER devices and connects via a Port Connection Kit; 2) for other imageRUNNER devices via a Copy Cable. The FDI Specification currently available addresses only the former connection method. Canon currently provides no support or specifications for the Copy Cable method or interface. If you require this specification please inform us so we can work to make it available.

Is accessory hardware required to enable the current FDI Specification?
Yes. A Canon-sourced Port Connection Kit – A1 must be installed on the imageRUNNER device. This kit collects and converts signals from several internal areas of the MFP and makes them available to the 3rd party device. The external connects to the imageRUNNER via the Port Connection Kit.

Where do developers obtain this Port Connection Kit? Can they install it themselves? DM Developers who are granted access to the FDI Specification are provided one Port Connection Kit as a development support courtesy. End customers obtain a kit via their Authorized Canon Dealer. Installation of the Port Connection Kit is complex; installation procedures are provided only to Authorized Canon Dealers. Service of an imageRUNNER device by a Non-Canon Authorized Dealer may void applicable equipment warrantees and terms of service.

Is a special version of system software required to enable FDI functions on supported imageRUNNER devices?
A “special” version is not required, but a minimum version level of system software must be installed on the MFP. Authorized Canon Dealers have access to the version information and system software.

Are specific firmware settings required to enable the FDI on supported imageRUNNERs?

Yes. The FDI via Port Connection Kit requires specific option settings via the MFP’s Service Mode. Access to Service Mode and the specific setting information is limited to Authorized Canon Dealers.

Do the special settings associated with the FDI disable all non-copy functions as well?
No. Only the copy settings are restricted. Functions such as Send, Mailbox, and Scan (if equipped) will still be available to a user. An Authorized Canon Technician can remove these functions from view via Service Mode.
